By now, most people would know what a domain name is. But to look at domain names more closely, here is what they can and can't contain:

What they can contain:
- A string of characters up to 63 characters in length
- All the letters of the English alphabet
- All the numbers from 0 through to 9
- Dashes or hyphens

What they cannot contain:
- Any other characters such as question marks (?), ampersands (&), hash (#), etc.

Hyphens can make domains more easily read by humans, however they are a pain when it comes to telling someone what your address is. For example, if your company web address is fantastic-public-relations.com.au, when you tell someone (or advertise on radio) your domain name, you have to say "fantastic dash public dash relations dot com dot au". When your domain name is hypenated, you should ALWAYS have an alternative, easier to say domain name as well and possibly shorter (eg fantasticpr.com.au). ALWAYS try to register the .com alternative of your .com.au domain name if available.

These days, search engines are smart enough to pick up words in a domain that are not separated by hyphens, so there is virtually no optimisation benefit to hyphenating a domain name.

You can register a domain in virtually any country, however unless your are targetting that country for sales, or plan to in the future, you are better off saving your money, or registering alternatives for your own country.
